SportsandFood.com brings this exclusive report from inside the Magic locker room.
NBA locker rooms are loaded with snacks. But there’s only one that matters to J.J. Redick.
“I have a Rice Krispies Treat, right after the starting lineup, literally as the ball is being tipped,” he told SportsandFood.com “That’s the only thing I snack on.”
I’m 95 percent sure Redick was kidding … but then again, I couldn’t see him on the far bench at tip-off.
Clearly a man of distinguished taste, Redick often finds himself dining alone on the road. While a lot of his teammates go out for meals together, Redick is off discovering the best each city has to offer.
“I’m what I would describe as a foodie,” Redick said, “so I plan my meals well in advance.”
That means doing research before each road trip.
“I find a restaurant that is maybe a trendy spot, a popular spot or is high on the Zagat list or whatever,” he said. “I do a lot of research before I go to a place, and I look forward to my meals in different cities.”
So where does an NBA shooting guard and Duke graduate turn for good advice?
“For some of the cities, GQ offers city guides with five or six spots to go to,” said Redick.
Redick treats his body like a temple, filling it with the best food. Which reminds me of a food story related to a player once linked with Redick due to college success, Adam Morrison.
Wizards blogger Sean Fagan told me that when Morrison was trying out for the Wizards this year, he said he always looked for the nearest Quiznos when his team touched down in a new city.
Quiznos? Maybe that’s why the fine-dining Redick is a rotation player for a championship contender and Morrison is currently looking for work.
