After a 6-7 season (3-5 in the SEC) and a defeat to Central Florida — Central Florida?? — in the Liberty Bowl, things obviously had to change in Athens. One of the things? Eating healthier. Out: fries, onion rings, pizza, chicken wings. Basically, the staples of a college student’s diet.
From the Ledger-Enquirer :
… the team also instituted a rigid nutrition program. How strict is it? During the week, players are told to send in photos of three meals per day and can only eat once it’s approved. It’s similar to when the staff does class attendance checks.
“If they don’t like what you have on your plate, you kind of just have to throw it away and go get something a little healthy,” receiver Tavarres King said.
One casualty was the hot wings from campus diners, which are popular among some players.
The picture thing seems a bit overboard — even Charlie Sheen thinks so. And seriously, good luck separating players from their fried chicken. I lived with a few football players in college. One player, a starting linebacker, would drive more than 30 minutes to go to the nearest Popeyes, even when there were a couple places nearby. Just because no one could separate him from his beloved Popeyes. And what about linemen? Those big boys need the fat and grease to keep those weights up.
We’ll all find out if it works once next season comes around. Spring football starts Thursday for the Bulldogs. But remember, boys, you don’t win friends with salad.
