Atlanta Quick Hitters: Booze, Gluttony and Girls in Kilts

By Thomas Emerick

ATLANTA – This city’s reputation precedes itself. Anyone from Georgia or surrounding states is quick to rave about the wealth of great places to consume copious amounts of alcohol and fried food while watching college basketball for six hours.

Surrounded by Kentucky-blue victory shots and dejected Jayhawks, I carried out spirited discourse on the best sports-viewing venues around; I even decided to visit a few while in town.

Here are four great spots to catch a game in the metropolis of the Deep South – each accompanied by three associative words in parenthesis, courtesy of the local population.

Taco Mac: (Beer, Ambiance, Big Screens)
1211 Ashford Crossing‬
Atlanta, GA 30346‬

Perhaps more regional than local — branching between Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee – Taco Mac does still offer a uniquely Atlanta experience thanks to eight locations in the postal limits and local Sweetwater brews. At the northernmost “Perimeter” Taco Mac, the massive display of beer selection resembles a giant organ, with the beautiful pipes rising toward the ceiling.

The Vortex Bar and Grill: (Quaint, Triple-Bypass, Drunk)
878 Peachtree Street Northeast‬
Atlanta, GA 30309‬

Tucked in beautiful Midtown Atlanta in Georgia Tech territory. If you like delicious hamburgers and chili — so much that you pile them on top of each other –you’ve found the right place. Great bar counter with long strip of televisions, perfect for watching the game up close with a couple friends. Just make sure one of them stays sober enough to defibrillate everyone.

Tilted Kilt Pub and Eatery: (Loud, Girls, Food)
2960 Cobb Parkway Southeast
Atlanta, GA 30339-3118

You guessed it: scantily clad girls in kilts. If that’s your thing, then you’ll find the wait staff quite accommodating. Flavorsome American entrees and wings also provide impetus for a rousing fan atmosphere.

TAP: (Classy, Midtown, Sexy)
1180 Peachtree St NE
Atlanta, GA 30309

If you’re bringing along your lady and her friends to watch the big game, this one’s a good call. Cocktails and cosmopolitans floweth. A wide range of food coupled with 21 beers and 16 wines and, of course, televised sports. A place everyone can agree on.

(Disclaimer: Surely there are many fantastic establishments not listed. Feel free to call me out in the comments and @ThomasEmerick.)
